Games on the AVE: Gamespot Reviews Darksiders II

Also available on PS3

First comes War; then comes Death. Appropriately enough, Darksiders II turns its eyes from its predecessor's protagonist to a new one: Death himself, War's brother and one of the four horsemen of the apocalypse. His story plays out over the same time period as War's, but Darksiders II's narrative isn't so much about plot as it is about place and tone. The originalDarksiders set a darkly fantastical mood, but the sequel hones its edges. The armor is still chunky and the sound of steel on steel still rings across battle arenas, but the skies are more ominous, the shadows grimmer, and the architecture sharper, as if every spire threatens to puncture the heavens and make them bleed.
And so Darksiders II draws you in not by narrative, in spite of its characters' frequent and raspy soliloquizing. Rather, it uses sights and sounds to impress upon you the importance of your deeds. While one level harks back to the angels-versus-demons, Christian apocalypse themes of the original game, Darksiders II springs forth from a more inventive vision. The dusky dungeons and desert expanses are more diverse than before, and the character designs are more imaginative, as if they've wandered in from biblical legends you've never heard. The characters you meet--undead rulers and impossibly proportioned behemoths among them--speak with humorless gravity, and Death often responds with a sneer and a verbal challenge.

The joylessness of Darksiders II's characters is a contrast to the pleasure of existing in this world. An icy opening introduces you to the basics of combat and movement. In traditional action game style, you slash away at clawed creatures with primary and secondary weapons. You run along walls and jump across beams like a devilish Prince of Persia. But most importantly--and in contrast to the original--your enemies drop coins, armor, and weapons. You can don equipment, sell it to a merchant, or sacrifice it to level up rare possessed weapons, which you can customize at certain thresholds. If the original Darksiders was an action/adventure/puzzle game, then the addition of loot drops role-playing elements into that mix, which brings to mind a potential concern: Darksiders was already a heavy mixture of recipes that had come before, recalling games like The Legend of Zelda, God of War, and even Portal. There were so many mechanics and so many tools to keep track of that the game struggled to find its own identity.
In Darksiders II, a funny thing happens on the way to the apocalypse: it establishes an identity all its own, rather than one defined through the games that inspired its existence. The game's expanded scope (about twice as big as the first game) and thoughtful pace (about twice as long as the first game) are most responsible for this. You now have a chance to breathe between battles, and each new mechanic has time to settle in before a new one is introduced. The more leisurely sense of pace is obvious from the very beginning. Darksiders' first hour was front-loaded with explosions, angelic cries, and the bloodcurdling sights of demonic forces swarming across the earth. Here, there are moments to take in the frozen chasms beneath you, and to enjoy the slick new motion mechanics that have you defying gravity in heady flights of fancy. (You won't miss War's wings in light of Death's fleet-footedness.)

Games on the AVE: Gamespot Reviews Sleeping Dogs

Available on PS3, Xbox 360, and PC

What does it take to survive as an undercover cop who infiltrates one of Hong Kong's most ruthless criminal organizations? If Sleeping Dogs is any indication, it takes martial arts prowess, good marksmanship, driving skill, a reckless willingness to leap from one speeding vehicle to another, and the confidence to sing karaoke. None of the individual elements in Sleeping Dogs are best-in-class, but they're all thoroughly enjoyable, and the structured story missions have you switching from one type of action to another frequently enough that you're never tired of what you're doing at any given moment. Additionally, the fictionalized version of Hong Kong where Sleeping Dogs takes place is an exotic and atmospheric setting for this tale of conflicting loyalties; you probably wouldn't want to live amid the ruthless criminals who populate the game's cast, but this world sure is a nice place to visit.

You play as Wei Shen, a Hong Kong native who has returned after spending some time in the States. Driven by a desire to avenge his sister's death, he accepts a dangerous assignment to infiltrate the Sun On Yee triad and help take them down from the inside. Starting out on the lowest rungs of the criminal ladder, he rapidly climbs up through the ranks, behaving in ways that sometimes make his triad cohorts suspect he's a cop and sometimes make his police superiors think he's getting too attached to his brothers in crime. It's a typical tale of an undercover cop possibly getting in too deep, and the story doesn't have any surprises in store for you. But solid voice acting and writing that convincingly blends English and Cantonese make it a narrative that's more than capable of supporting the gameplay, providing context for many a dramatic mission and building up to a cathartic climax that's bloody enough to be taken right out of one of John Woo's Hong Kong action films.
Sleeping Dogs is an open-world game, but it doesn't start out by setting you free. The opening chapters keep you on a tight leash as they introduce you to the basics of movement and melee combat, which is good, since that combat plays a huge role in the game as a whole. Taking its cues from the standard-setting brawling of Batman: Arkham Asylum and its sequel, this combat has you unleashing combos and using timed button presses to counter enemy attacks. Wei's attacks look and feel powerful, and the bone-breaking animations may often make you squirm and make your enemies flinch.
But what sets Sleeping Dogs' combat apart from games with similar systems is the emphasis on environmental attacks. In most places where you find yourself needing to clobber some fools, you can drag enemies to certain objects around you and use these things to finish them off. These environmental finishers range from the relatively restrained old standby of tossing a thug into a dumpster, to the much more original and brutal attack that has Wei impaling an enemy on a swordfish head. There's a good assortment of these attack opportunities throughout the game, and a number of chances for you to make your own fun with the environment, too. Tossing an enemy from the upper level of a swanky club to the level down below isn't, strictly speaking, one of the game's contextual environmental attacks, but don't let that stop you from doing it. It's empowering and effective.

Taster'Z Choice: New Pics + We Finally Got More Shirts on the WAY !!

It all STARTS with an IDEA !

Ok, so its been awhile since I've posted anything Taster'Z Choice related. Seeing how popular that one post is on BlvdAve where I showed some Fitted Caps & Sneaks that went with our Sun Beam Tee (CLICK HERE TO SEE) I figured it was time to do a new post to update everybody that cares what's going on with Taster'Z Choice. Well, things have been kinda, scratch that, things HAVE BEEN very SLOW but STEADY !! It's a process starting any business. Just cuz you think you can do something, doesnt necessarily mean you CAN. Now I'd like to think that I'm a pretty fashionable guy, or I at least know whats HOT and what's NOT. I'm no fashion icon like Alexander McQueen, but I know how to put together an outfit. Plus, with this urban boutique fashion, its not that hard anyway (I.E. base your shirt color scheme around a popular shoe release like the Space Jams or the Bordeaux Air Jordan Retro VII's for example). Sounds easy enough right ? Well its NOT ! lol. Even if you have a dope design and get the shirts made, that doesnt exactly mean you're shit is gonna sell ! So I'm likening this experience to the hit HBO show thats now cancelled, "How to Make It in America." Cuz things are really moving like that for Taster'Z Choice. We're (Noemi M.G.) in the first season tho, not the 2nd lol. So I say all that to say this, make sure you have a plan and that you're ready to promote your ass off !! Oh,  and make sure the designs is tight !!! Things have taken off slowly I'll admit. And I'm not gonna post all of my frustrations up either because there were other forces at work that have hindered the Progress of this upstart Clothing Venture. But in no way, shape or form am I ready to GIVE UP !!! I will admit tho that I put my foot in my mouth a couple times, saying new designs and colors of the Sun Beam tee were on the way when the truth is we're just now getting ready to make new color ways. But a real man can admit when he's wrong. But on a lighter note, I was able to sell a couple of shirts this past summer and I got alot of positive feedback about the design and look of the shirt as well. Below is a couple of pics of people who bought the shirt and had nothing but postive feedback to give us about it. Also pictured is myself (Tazo C @legendkillerzo on twitter) and Taster'Z Choice co-creator Big Reese @bigreese83 , you can also hit Noemi's company twitter via @NoemiMediaGroup) So take a look at the pics below, and I promise I'll have more info on whats to come in the near Future from Taster'Z Choice !!!

adidas Originals EQT Remodel – Black – Slime

adidas Originals’ Remodel series offers subtle revisions on classic Three Stripes models and the above pictured pair finds itself a reference to one of adidas all-time best running designs.  The adidas EQT Remodel is designed after the fan favorite Equipment Support ’91 but this new release feels quite fresh thanks to a unique colorway that blends black with neon green and a peculiar shade of dark blue that’s somehow almost like an intermediary between those two colors.  Click through so you can see some additional angles and then grab a pair from TGWO.
