Box Office RESULTS: MLK WEEKEND

A Big 3-day MLK weekend with box office showing a 30% increase from last year to become second biggest MLK weekend ever with an est. $215.5M take total. Hey, thanks, Universal for giving it a one-two punch (Lone Survivor, $23.2M 3-day). Last night’s estimates for all pictures, including this weekend’s crowning champ, Ride Along, are holding steady, with a 3-day estimate now at $42.1M and a 4-day expected in at $48.1M from most distribs (Universal is still being cautious, saying $47.7M). For more info about Ride Along (the Tim Story directed,  Ice Cube and Kevin Hart starrer), read the updates below the numbers. So nothing much has changed from last night. And will take a look at other Oscar nominated pictures. The-Nut-Job-Movie-2014In the meantime, Open Road Films’ The Nut Job has stored away a tidy $20.5M for the three-day and $26.6M to $27.2M for the 4-day and can only imagine how much more it would have gathered hadFrozen melted some, but Disney’s picture can’t stop itself. Open Road Films is ecstatic, noting that Nut Job is the highest animated opener ever for a non-studio film (bigger than previous record-holder Coraline which opened to $16.8M in the 3-day in 2009). It’s also bigger than than Escape From Planet EarthFree Birds — both did 15.8M — and Hoodwinked, $12.4M. “We’re over the moon. We knew the picture was terrific and would play well with the young kids and into the teens. What helped us was the evening business,” said Open Road CEO Tom Ortenberg. “We knew the picture deserved numbers like this. It’s a testament to our marketing and distribution team, (marketing pres.) Jason Cassidy and (evp distrib.) Elliot Slutzky.” Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit is in fourth opening very soft and its worldwide gross expected at $41.6M so far. Don’t see how this film will become profitable. American Hustle got a nice little bump to take 6 and The Wolf of Wall Street in 9th and Her looks to nab the 10 spot.Devil’s Due, well, it’s … ah, never mind. How much will football impact today. It’s a key day for Ride Along, although it’s got a strong female audience on this one so that’s good news for Universal.

Box Office Results: September 20, 2013 - September 22, 2013

Alright yall here are your box office results !!! There was still a strong breakout movie in the dark dramatic thriller Prisoners (Warner Bros.), starring Hugh Jackman, Jake Gyllenhaal, Paul Dano, Maria Bello, Terrence Howard and Melissa Leo. Directed by Oscar-nominated French-Canadian filmmaker Denis Villeneuve, the well-reviewed film about the search for two kidnapped girls brought in an estimated $21.4 million its opening weekend to take first place. After winning last weekend and becoming the second-biggest September opener, James Wan's hit horror sequel Insidious Chapter 2 (FilmDistrict) took a nasty 64% plunge in its second weekend, dropping to second place with $14.5 million, although its 10-day $60.9 million gross has already surpassed the gross of its predecessor. Luc Besson's crime-action flick The Family (Relativity), starring Robert De Niro and Michelle Pfeiffer, took in $7 million this weekend to take third place--down roughly 50% from its opening--with a total gross of $25.6 million so far. The hit Mexican comedy Instructions Not Included (Lionsgate/Pantelion) pulled well ahead of the pack, adding another $5.7 million in just 978 theaters to bring its total domestic gross to $34.4 million at fourth place. That weekend take is up 17% from last weekend, which is quite an anomaly, considering that it only added 45 extra theaters this weekend. The dance movie craze is officially over and apparently, so is Chris Brown's career, as Battle of the Year 3D (Screen Gems/Sony), the latest attempt to revive both, failed to find much of an audience, opening with just $5 million in 2,008 theaters, at fifth place averaging less than $2,500 per venue. Check out the list below for the remaining top 12 movies in theaters and check back friday for the latest movies in theaters.

Box Office RESULTS: September 13, 2013 - September 15, 2013

Just two months after his horror movie The Conjuring opened with $41.8 million, Saw co-creator James Wan was back behind the camera of his first sequel, Insidious Chapter 2 (FilmDistrict), once again starring Patrick Wilson, Rose Byrne, Lin Shaye, Ty Simpkins, Barbara Hershey and Wan's screenwriting partner Leigh Whannell, and it proved to be just as big a hit.

It opened on Thursday night with previews that brought in $1.5 million, but it really exploded on its well-selected Friday the 13th opening day with $20.1 million. The anticipation for the sequel as well as its opening day accounted for the movie's frontloading, going by the studio's three-day weekend estimate of $41 million, which still makes it the second-highest opener for September as well as the second-biggest horror opening for the year just behind The Conjuring

Neither movie surpassed the opening for the third installment of Blumhouse Productions' flagship horror franchise Paranormal Activity 3 and its record-setting horror opening of $52.5 million, but both opened bigger than the movies in that series that preceded and followed it.

Robert De Niro, Michelle Pfeiffer and Tommy Lee Jones were the three big name veterans starring in the Luc Besson's crime-action flick The Family (Relativity), which opened in 3,091 theaters on Friday to take 2nd place with $14.5 million for the weekend.

Vin Diesel's return as Riddick (Universal) took a nasty plunge in its second weekend, dropping 63% to 3rd place with just $7 million and $31.3 million grossed in its first ten days.

The weekend saw a fairly close race for fourth place, but Lee Daniels' The Butler (The Weinstein Company) came out slightly ahead of the R-rated road comedy We're the Millers (New Line/WB) with $5.6 million to the latter's $5.4 million. The Weinsteins' historic drama looks to achieve the $100 million milestone including Sunday estimates while "Millers" has grossed $131.6 million since opening in early August. Check the rest of the list for the remainder of the top 12 films in theaters and we'll be back on friday with the latest batch of movie releases for you to check out !
