Joel Embiid Swagger Back, 76ers Avoid Elimination; LeBron James Sweeps R...

Published on May 8, 2018
On today's episode of #OutofBounds, Gilbert Arenas, Pierce Simpson, and Adam Caparell discuss the 76ers avoiding elimination against the Celtics, with T.J. McConnell having a career night and Joel Embiid getting his trash-talking swagger back. Was the Game 4 win a turning point for the Sixers?

Also, the LeBron James-led Cavs completed a series sweep of the Raptors with a blowout. Did Toronto stars DeMar DeRozan and Kyle Lowry give up? And do either the Celtics or Sixers stand a chance against Cleveland in the Eastern Conference Finals?

Looking forward to tonight's games, will the Rockets close out the Jazz in Houston? And was Game 4 proof that — unlike in past years — the Rockets can win when James Harden has a subpar performance now that he has CP to help carry the scoring load and Clint Capela holding things down on D?

Next, will the Warriors close out their series with the Pelicans? What can New Orleans do to win and force a Game 6 back in Louisiana? Plus, with a Rockets-Warriors Western Conference Finals seeming inevitable, Gil questions whether coach Mike D'Antoni can make playoff adjustments to hang with Golden State.

In "Fair or Foul?" the team weighs in on the Pistons firing head coach and president of basketball operations Stan Van Gundy. Gil breaks down what his old coach is like and why there's a limit to how long he can work with a team. Also, the crew debates whether the timing of the firing is foul, and if it was wrong to saddle the next coach and executive with the roster and contracts that SVG was responsible for. Plus, will the Pistons be improved and make the playoffs in the next couple years?

After Kylia Carter, mother of former Duke basketball star Wendell Carter, compared the current system of NCAA basketball to slavery, Gil and the guys respond to the analogy, as well as the idea of free labor and education in college sports.

Finally, the team reacts to Icelandic powerlifter and "Game of Thrones" actor Hafthor Björnsson, who plays “The Mountain” on the hit HBO series, winning the World’s Strongest Man competition. Hibachi turns the heat way up on powerlifting as a sport before sharing what he would do if he were as big and strong as the athletes who compete by pulling trucks and lifting boulders.

Jemele Hill Talks Trump's Kaepernick Invite, Twitter Threats, and Rocket...

Published on May 9, 2018
On today's episode of #OutofBounds, Chief Correspondent and Senior Columnist with ESPN’s The Undefeated Jemele Hill joins Gilbert Arenas, Pierce Simpson, and Adam Caparell to discuss NBA playoff action and the intersection of sports, politics, and social media.

The Rockets advanced to the Western Conference Finals by beating the Jazz 112-102 in Houston. After Chris Paul took over with 41 points, 7 rebounds, and 10 assists, the panel breaks down how CP3 changed his game to boost the Rockets.

The Warriors also advanced to the WCF, defeating the Pelicans 113-104 with a balanced offensive attack from Steph Curry, Kevin Durant, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green. As good a team as the Rockets are, is there any way they can beat Golden State's Hamptons 5/Death Lineup and depth?

Looking ahead to tonight's Game 5, when Boston will look to close out Philly at home, OOB debates whether the young 76ers — who got their swagger back in their first elimination game after seeming overwhelmed in Beantown — will overcome the hostile playoff atmosphere to force a Game 6. Also, Gil questions Philly's use of Markelle Fultz and Jemele explains why she's not surprised that the Celtics have performed so well in the playoffs.

In "The Step-Back," the panel talks about the ugly side of sports social media after comedian Andrew Polk tweeted that he hoped Draymond Green would get shot in the face. Jemele — who's no stranger to social media controversy — breaks down the line you shouldn't cross. Gil explains why some athletes should respond to haters online and others should not. Plus, everyone shares the ugliest thing someone has said about them on social media.

After President Donald Trump reportedly gave approval to invite Colin Kaepernick to the White House for a series of conversations on race involving athletes and musicians, Jemele takes issue with the motivations behind the move. The crew asks what Kaepernick would gain or lose by accepting the invitation. Also, Gil identifies the Trump critics whom the Donald doesn't go after on Twitter and why.

Finally, OOB discusses the NFL denying running back Mike James’s request to use cannabis as a painkiller instead of powerful, addictive opioids. Jemele offers insight into the league's continuing resistance to the plant, and Gil explains the difference between treating pain with weed and getting high.

Box Office RESULTS: 'Avengers: Infinity War' Crosses $1 Billion Worldwide in Record Time

Disney and Marvel's Avengers: Infinity War continues its record pace, topping $450 million domestically in just nine days and the $1 billion mark worldwide in a record 11 days. Among the weekend's new wide releases, MGM and Lionsgate's Overboard remake delivered a solid debut in the runner-up position while Focus's Tully and Electric Entertainment's Bad Samaritan delivered disappointing debuts in the low single digits.

With an estimated $112.4 million, Disney and Marvel's Avengers: Infinity War is once again the king of the weekend box office, topping its nearest competitor by nearly $100 million, and delivering the second largest second weekend ever. The film's domestic gross now stands at $450.8 million after just ten days in release, pacing behind only Star Wars: The Force Awakens which reached that mark in just nine days.

Internationally, Infinity War remained the #1 western release in every territory in which it has been released, posting an estimated $162.6 million from 54 overseas markets this weekend for a global weekend totaling $275.1 million, bringing the film's worldwide cume to a massive $1.16 billion.

The lone new major market for Infinity War this weekend was the Thursday release in Russia where it set a new opening weekend record topping the previous best posted by Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, delivering an estimated $17.6 million, already exceeding the lifetime cume of Captain America: Civil War in the market. South Korea continues to lead the way internationally where the film has brought in $69.1 million followed by the UK ($67.2m), Mexico ($48.7m), Brazil ($44.3m) and India ($35.7m). The film releases in China next weekend on May 11 where, using current exchange rates, Civil War debuted with $98 million, Avengers: Age of Ultron debuted with $84 million and Black Panther debuted with $66 million.

Overall, Infinity War's 11 day run to $1 billion worldwide is the fastest of any film in history and the sixth Marvel title to reach that mark and 17th for Walt Disney Studios. A total of 34 films have crossed $1 billion at the worldwide box office, see the full list here.

In second is MGM and Lionsgate's Pantelion Films's release of Overboard, a contemporary remake of the 1987 film starring Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn. This time the roles were reversed with Anna Faris starring opposite Latin star Eugenio Derbez and the film brought in an estimated $14.75 million from just 1,623 locations. The performance is a bit behind Mojo's weekend forecast, but ahead of the studio's opening weekend expectations. The film received an "A-" CinemaScore from opening weekend audiences which were 61% female and 83% were over the age of 25.

Paramount's A Quiet Place finished in third position as the hit horror continues its impressive run with an estimated $7.6 million this weekend for a domestic cume just shy of $160 million. Additionally, the film brought in an estimated $4.1 million internationally this weekend, bringing its worldwide cume to $255.3 million.

Amy Schumer's I Feel Pretty finished in fourth with an estimated $4.9 million for a domestic cume that now totals $37.8 million.

Rounding out the top five is Warner Bros. and New Line's Rampage with an estimated $4.6 million for a domestic cume that is now just shy of $85 million. Additionally, Rampage added $13.7 million internationally, bringing its global cume to $377.9 million with releases in Germany (May 10) and Japan (May 18) in the near future.

Just outside the top five, Focus Features's release of Jason Reitman's Tully brought in an estimated $3.18 million from 1,353 theaters. The performance is right in the middle of industry expectations, but still something of a disappointment as the studio went with a wide opening weekend rather than use the film's positive reviews and go with a platform release, attempting to bank on word of mouth. The film played to audiences that were 60% female vs. 40% male with 67% of the audience coming in at 30 years of age or older.

Behind Tully in seventh position is Disney and Marvel's Black Panther, which delivered a strong $3.1 million, pushing the film's domestic cume over $693 million, just $7 million shy of becoming only the third film to ever reach $700 million domestically.

And rounding out the top ten is Electric Entertainment's release of Bad Samaritan, pulling in an estimated $1.76 million from 2,007 theaters for a disappointing $876 per theater average. While far from the worst opening average of all-time, it is the tenth worst for a film opening in 2,000 theaters or more as well as one of the ten worst openings ever for a film debuting in 2,000+ locations. Opening day audiences gave the film a "B-" CinemaScore.

KD and Warriors in Championship Form; Is James Harden the NBA's Best 1-o...

On today's episode of #OutofBounds, streetball legend Bone Collector joins Gilbert Arenas and the crew to discuss the NBA playoffs, with four semifinal series seemingly headed to quick ends. Kevin Durant dropped 38 points on the Pelicans as the Warriors rolled to a 3-1 series lead. With Stephen Curry only recently returned from a knee injury, is Golden State already back to championship form?

The Rockets took a commanding 3-1 lead over the Jazz in their series, thanks in large part to Chris Paul's scoring and Clint Capela's rim protection. James Harden had an underwhelming night, but with ankle-breaker Bone Collector in the house the squad debates whether Houston's herky-jerky superstar is the best one-on-one player in the league right now.

Looking forward to Game 4 and potential eliminations in the Celtics-Sixers and Cavs-Raptors series, the panel predicts if Philadelphia and Toronto will lose and start their summer vacations. Plus, Gil and Bone break down the problems with Ben Simmons’ and DeMar DeRozan's games, and ask whether Toronto should blow their team up if/when LeBron bounces them for a third straight year.

In "Fire Fit," the guys rate the outfits athletes wore to the Kentucky Derby on Saturday. Which athlete had the best outfit at the Derby: Von Miller, Jason Witten, or Laila Ali? Plus, a curveball contestant you have to see.

The Bucks plan to interview Spurs’ assistant coach Becky Hammon for their head coaching job, making her the first woman ever to interview for such a position. Will she land that gig — or any other NBA head coaching spot — in the near future. In a heated debate, Gil explains what he thinks will be the biggest obstacle for Hammon at that level.

Finally, in "On This Day..." OOB looks back to May 7, 1994, when the Nuggets beat the SuperSonics 98-94 in OT to become the first eighth seed in NBA history to eliminate a one seed in the playoffs. The guys rank the feat among the all-time greatest upsets.

BOX OFFICE RESULTS: Late Edition 'Avengers: Infinity War' Opens with Record Shattering $250M Domestically & $630M Worldwide

Audiences assembled worldwide as Disney and Marvel's Avengers: Infinity War broke both the domestic opening weekend box office record and worldwide opening record with a massive $250 million domestically and $630 million worldwide. In its wake, the majority of films on the weekend box office chart fell dramatically, though fellow Marvel Cinematic Universe release Black Panther improved its position from eighth place last weekend to a spot in this weekend's top five, truly making this a Marvel-ous weekend.
Infinity War's opening weekend bests the previous record of $247.9 million set by Star Wars: The Force Awakens back in December 2015 by just over $2 million, but it's also worth mentioning Disney under-estimated Black Panther's $202 million opening by nearly $10 million on Sunday. The studio also under-estimated The Avengers's performance by $7 million and under-estimated Avengers: Age of Ultron by $3.6 million. As such, don't be surprised to see Infinity War's debut blossom come actuals on Monday afternoon. At this moment, the film accounts for 84.4% of the domestic top twelve, second only to Ultron's 84.5% market share. Internationally, Infinity War delivered a monstrous $380 million from approximately 72% of the international marketplace. The debut is the second largest to Fate of the Furious though its important to note that film had the benefit of China grosses over its opening weekend, which represented $185 million (41.7%) of its $443 million international debut. Altogether, Infinity War's global debut reached $630 million, shattering the previous record of $541.9 million set by Fate of the Furious and doing so without China, where the film will open on May 11.
Highlights from Infinity War's international debut include #1 openings in all territories led by the UK with $42.2m followed by South Korea ($39.2m*), Mexico ($25.1m*), Australia ($23.0m), Brazil ($18.8m*), India ($18.6m), France ($17.7m), Germany ($14.7m), Philippines ($12.5m*), Italy ($11.0m), Thailand ($10.0m*), Indonesia ($9.6m*), Taiwan ($9.5m), Japan ($9.0m), Malaysia ($8.4m*) and Spain ($8.3m). The film also delivered the #1 international IMAX debut ever, excluding China, with a total of $41 million globally from $22.5 million domestically and $18.5 internationally. Prior to the film's opening in China, Infinity War will open in Russia next weekend. Looking ahead, Infinity War received an "A" CinemaScore from opening day audiences. Audiences were 58% male with 58% of the overall audience coming in over the age of 25. In terms of what to expect domestically, using multipliers from previous films in the MCU, a domestic performance over $600 million seems a given, but how much higher than that is unclear. A performance similar to Avengers: Age of Ultron would actually result in a domestic run right at $600 million, while comparisons to only Captain America: Civil War and Iron Man 3 would result in a domestic total below that mark. All told, Infinity War's estimated $630 million worldwide opening means the 19 films so far released in the Marvel Cinematic Universe have now amassed nearly $15.5 billion combined.
Finishing in second is Paramount's A Quiet Place, serving as the only film on the weekend chart to top double digits in the face of Infinity War. The film brought in an estimated $10.65 million for a cume just a couple million shy of $150 million. Looking at the list of supernatural horror films, this makes A Quiet Place the fifth largest ever and it will soon top 2000's What Lies Beneath ($155.4m).
STX's I Feel Pretty landed in third, delivering an estimated $8.1 million for its sophomore session, a 49% drop compared to last weekend, resulting in a cume that currently sits just shy of $30 million.
In fourth is Warner Bros.'s and New Line's Rampage, which dropped a hefty 65% for an estimated $7.1 million weekend and a domestic cume that now stands at $77.9 million. Internationally, Rampage added an estimated $16.2 million this weekend, pushing its international total to $256.7 million for a global cume totaling $334.6 million. The film opens in France this coming Wednesday.
Rounding out the top five is Disney and Marvel's Black Panther, which enjoyed a nice bump thanks to its fellow MCU title, delivering an estimated $4.38 million, signaling just an 11% drop compared to last weekend as the film's cume is now at a massive $688 million domestically. This is also the first time since The Incredible Hulk debuted in 2008 that two films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe find themselves in the weekend top ten at the same time.
Just outside the top five, after a stellar debut, Super Troopers 2 dipped 76% in its second weekend with an estimated $3.6 million for a domestic cume just over $22 million, surpassing the original's $18.5 million after just ten days in release.
Bleecker Street's Disobedience topped the weekend's new limited releases, bringing in an estimated $241,276 from five theaters for a strong $48,255 per theater average. The film played in New York and LA this weekend and will be expanding to ten additional markets next weekend.

Jazz Ground Rockets; Grading Lonzo Ball; NBA's Top 5 Annoying Celebrity ...

On today's episode of #OutofBounds, NBA front office veteran and ESPN analyst Amin Elhassan joins Gilbert Arenas and the crew to make sense of Utah's surprise 116-108 win in Houston. Gil and Amin break down the defensive accomplishment of the Jazz — yes, even with James Harden posting 32 points, 7 rebounds, 11 assists — and debate whether Rockets coach Mike D'Antoni is a good playoff coach or not.
Looking forward to tonight's Cavs-Raptors Game 2, the panel predicts whether LeBron and Cleveland can grab another win in Toronto before wondering what's next for troll Drake after his Game 1 altercations with Kendrick Perkins. Speaking of Perk, Amin gives the man his due for one of the NBA's all-time best trash-talking quotes. Also, in the Celtics-Sixers series, can Philly's young stars overcome the moment and Brad Stevens’ masterful coaching of the injury-depleted Celtics?
While Drake is getting all the attention after his tough talk with Perk, he's not the only celebrity NBA fan who gets on people's nerves. In "Top 5," the panel runs down the Top 5 Most Annoying Celebrity NBA Fans, and even throws in a special honorable mention that's sure to piss a bunch of people off.
In a recent ESPN interview, the Lakers’ Lonzo Ball gave himself a letter grade for his rookie season. Taking it a step further than his on-court performance, OOB grades Zo as a player, brand, and rapper, and measures it all against his immense hype. His report card may shock you.
Finally, with the Knicks reportedly trying to finalize the hiring of a new head coach this week after interviewing many diverse candidates — some extremely head-scratching ones among them — Amin explains how New York's process is atypical for the league. He and Gil clarify what the woeful Knicks need to overcome a history of incompetence before everyone makes their picks for whom the team should hire.

Drake-Kendrick Perkins Beef; Steph Curry Cooks in Return; Raptors Alread...

On today's episode of #OutofBounds, Gilbert Arenas and the crew discuss the Cavs' Game 1 overtime win in Toronto and ask if the disappointing Raptors are already done. In another L for the Six, Drake got into two hilarious altercations with Cavs reserve center Kendrick Perkins, who would undoubtedly end him in a fight. Was Drizzy out of line, and does his heckling hurt the Raptors?
Despite Klay Thompson shooting a miserable 4-for-20, the Warriors beat the Pelicans thanks, in part, to Steph Curry returning from a knee injury and scoring 28 points off the bench. With his stars all back, what does Golden State head coach Steve Kerr need to do moving forward in the series?
Looking ahead to tonight's Game 2 between Houston and Utah, OOB breaks down the only possible way that the Jazz can stop James Harden and the Rockets' potent offense. Actually, there are two methods, but one is illegal.
A recent ESPN article pointed to Kawhi Leonard's new reps — one of whom is his uncle — and the Spurs' control issues as the source of the beef between the franchise and its star. In "The Pull-Up," Gil and the guys ask if the Spurs should still offer Kawhi the $219 million supermax this summer. Also, Gil explains how mixing business and family typically goes wrong.
In "Fair or Foul?" the team weighs in on Jaguars owner Shahid Khan's plan to buy Wembley Stadium and host the Super Bowl in London. Is it a good idea? Also, in discussing the idea of an NFL team in London, Gil explains how a star player's life would change overseas.

Greg Jennings on Dez Bryant's Future; Top 5 NBA Rivalries; Celtics Blow ...

On this special 100th episode of #OutofBounds, Gilbert Arenas and the crew share the table with two-time Pro Bowler, Super Bowl XLV champion, and Fox Sports analyst Greg Jennings to discuss how impressive it was for the injury-depleted Celtics to blow out the Sixers in Game 1 of their semifinal series. What does Philly need to do to turn things around in Game 2?
With the start of a new chapter in the historic rivalry between Boston and Philadelphia, the panel runs down their Top 5 NBA Rivalries of All Time. Lakers-Celtics is obvious, but some of the picks will surprise you.
Looking ahead to tonight's playoff games, OOB asks if a "burnt" LeBron James will have anything left in his tank when the Raptors host his Cavs. On the flip side, how does Toronto win the series and avoid being knocked out by Cleveland for a third straight year? And, after the Warriors blew the Pelicans out in Game 1, will Steph Curry's return from a knee sprain after 15 games help or hurt the rolling Dubs?
After the Cowboys released him — he he turned down a multi-year deal in search of a one-year deal to prove his worth — wide receiver Dez Bryant remains unsigned. Greg picks the team he thinks Dez should go to, and he and Gil debate the merits of betting on yourself when you risk losing money.
Finally, with several recent sports news stories focusing on athletes' motivation, hustle, and competitiveness, Gil and Greg explain how you can measure those attributes in players, as well as what personally drove them to greatness. Plus, they reveal the most competitive players they played against and how those guys tried to get in their heads.

LeBron James and Russell Westbrook Take Over; Ball Bros Bounce From Lith...

Published on Apr 26, 2018
On yesterday's show, Gilbert Arenas and the #OutofBounds crew begin by discussing Elon Musk's plan to build a cyborg dragon. In related WTF news, Gil is apparently unfamiliar with the billionaire behind Tesla and SpaceX, and his reason why will have you rolling.
Looking back at last night's playoff action, Gil identifies the unexpected Raptors difference-maker who's causing his Wizards to lose. Next, Hibachi breaks down the unstoppable force that is LeBron James, after LBJ did it all in Cleveland, damn near posting a triple-double with 44 points and delivering a clutch block and the game-winning three. And despite the Rockets eliminating the Timberwolves in Houston, Agent Zero is unimpressed with the one-seed and explains why. Then, after the Thunder fought back from down 25 to avoid elimination, Gil makes sense of Russell Westbrook's crazy game (45 points on 39 shots), as well as Carmelo Anthony's irrelevance.
In "Face-to-Face," former NBA forward and Pacers analyst Scot Pollard joins OOB to discuss the Cleveland-Indiana series, including LeBron's dominance, his suspect supporting cast and how it compares to the team they played on together, and Victor Oladipo's struggles.
Looking ahead to tonight's Celtics-Bucks Game 6, the team asks if Giannis will be aggressive and have a superstar game to stave off elimination before picking which teams will advance in the unresolved series.
Then, with LaVar Ball pulling his sons LiAngelo and LaMelo out of Lithuania over a dispute with their coach, OOB discusses what we learned from the Ball Brothers' overseas circus and what's next for Lonzo's siblings.
Finally, with the NFL Draft mercifully upon us, in "Fair or Foul?" the guys weigh in on teams endlessly analyzing and picking apart players in the draft process, and Gil explains what they should really be looking at.

Freed Meek Mill's Effect on the Sixers; Pelicans Lowballing DeMarcus Cou...

On today's show, Gilbert Arenas and the #OutofBounds crew kick things off by responding to Nick Young's story about Gil breaking his brand new expensive glasses when he was a rookie. Hibachi has no problem admitting he gave Swaggy P hell — and shares details — but sets the record straight on that incident.
Looking back at last night's playoff action, OOB asks if the Celtics and Bucks are simply too mediocre to watch, and Gil explains how Jason Kidd's firing affected Giannis. Plus, what effect did Meek Mill’s release from prison and presence in the arena have in the Sixers' series-clinching win over the Miami? Also, has Heat star Dwyane Wade played his last NBA game? And with the Spurs eliminated, Agent Zero has an interesting take on what to expect from the Warriors-Pelicans semifinal series.
Next, OOB revisits Meek Mill's release and what it says about the sports’ world’s ability to bring attention to issues, create dialogue, and affect change. Gil makes an important distinction about who really has the power to make things happen. Plus, with Meek going straight from prison to the 76ers' playoff game, where does that put him amongst the all-time greatest Philly fans?
Looking forward to tonight's games, the squad asks if the Raptors, who’ve struggled with inconsistency in the playoffs, will be overwhelmed by the pressure to beat the Wizards in Toronto. And is Drake’s trash talk fueling the Wiz? Back home in Cleveland, will LeBron even need help from his teammates to finally take a lead in the Cavs' series with the Pacers? It's likely that the Rockets will close out the Timberwolves in Houston, but will James Harden and company win it all, as Suge Knight predicted while on trial for murder? Gil might need to watch what he says about Suge.... Will the Thunder make the adjustments needed to win and avoid elimination?
Finally, in "The Pull-Up," the team discusses a report that New Orleans may use DeMarcus Cousins's Achilles injury and the Pelicans' success without him to make him a reduced contract offer. Boogie may want to hire Gil as an agent, because Hibachi straight cooks the franchise for even considering lowballing the big man.
